Pressure measurement in agriculture

Bourdon tube pressure gauges for agricultural field sprayers (AppBe_M_086)

for manufacturers of field sprayers, service workshops
Fields of application Pressure Measurement in Agriculture ARMANO Messtechnik GmbH
In agriculture, sprayers for fertilisers or insecticides/pesticides are used. These systems have to withstand difficult operation conditions.

The problem:

Due to small nozzle cross-sections, which moreover tend to clog, the pressure can exceed the normal operating pressure considerably when starting abruptly.

Our solution:

For this application, our instruments are protected particularly against overpressure. In the operating range, the scale is divided linearly up to approx. 230°. Beyond that, the overpressure range starts, which reaches a pointer deflection of 270°. Precise reading in the operating range and simultaneous overpressure protection of the pressure gauge is possible.

Pressure measurement in the automotive industry

Bourdon tube pressure gauges for filling levels in the automotive industry (AppBe_M_087)

for manufacturers of filling systems
Fields of application Pressure Measurement in the Automotive Industry ARMANO Messtechnik GmbH
There are many fields in the automotive industry where pressure measuring instruments are used. The range of applications is very diverse and the requirements are very specific. This application involves the filling of vehicles with various aggressive media.

The problem:

The filling of vehicles with liquid media (e.g. brake fluid, engine and gear oil, refrigerant, fuel) is a difficulty. At the filling stations a mist is produced that emits into the environment. These media are partially aggressive. Therefore, all non-metallic external parts of the pressure gauges (window and sealings) have to meet increased demands. For this application, suitable parts and sealants must be used to avoid leakage of the case filling.

Our solution:

In consultation with our customers, the following materials have proven themselves in most cases:

  • Window: laminated safety glass
  • Sealants:
    • Viton for windows and connection pieces
    • PTFE for the case screws
    • Fibre-reinforced composite for the screw plug

For this application, we use a pressure gauge with crimped-on ring case. Here, the window is encapsulated in this crimped-on ring, which is better than the case configuration with bayonet ring.

Pressure measurement in the automotive industry

In-line seals for pressure measurement on painting installations (AppBe_M_088)

for manufacturers of painting installations, motor vehicles and other surface coatings
Fields of application Pressure Measurement in the Automotive Industry ARMANO Messtechnik GmbH
The automobile industry demands increasingly specific measuring tasks. In painting installations problems can arise during the processing of gloss paint, especially when changing batches. Even the spraying process method partially puts high demands on the pressure gauges.

The problem:

Gloss paint is a medium that should stick well on surfaces, but not in the painting installations. Deposits could lead to a mixture of the products that is not desired. When changing the colour, e.g. from red to white, it has to be guaranteed that a pure white is produced and not pink. Therefore, the paint should run from the tank to the spray gun through pipes that are crevice-free, smooth and easy to clean. During electrostatic (ESTA) painting, the colour particles are applied by electrical high tension.

Our solution:

We use in-line seals which are suitable for measurements free of dead spaces. So-called pigs can remove the paint from the piping system completely. Thus, when changing the colour, the piping system can be cleaned more easily. Disturbing dead spaces are mostly avoided. These in-line seals are specifically designed to meet the special requirements of our customers, also when it comes to silicone.
In general, the versions are silicone-free.
These instruments are entirely free of paint-wetting impairment substances (PWIS-free).
Upon request we can deliver high-voltage-proof in-line seals.

Pressure measurement in the field of utility vehicles

Pressure gauges for inspections of air brake systems on trucks (AppBe_M_089)

for supervisory organisations (ÜO) that are approved for the execution of the main inspection
Fields of application Pressure Measurement in the Field of Utility Vehicles ARMANO Messtechnik GmbH
According to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) art. 29, motor vehicles have to be inspected for road safety regularly. The general inspection (HU) has been performed in Germany since 1951. But meanwhile, also in the EU member states, in the USA and in other countries, similar regulations are applied.
As part of the general inspection the braking action is tested. For this purpose, brake test benches, so-called roller brake test stands, are used.

The problem:

The inspection of brake systems on trucks* is not feasible on public roads. Therefore, the braking force is measured on a brake test bench depending on the load conditions.

The brake test bench is an apparatus that is used for testing the brake system of motor vehicles.

Pressure gauges are applied to receive precise measuring results for the brake system. With pressure gauges it is possible to test the compressed-air system on trucks as well as on respective trailers.

The pressure gauge measures so-called “set pressures”when the brake pedal is pressed.

The current technical guidelines state that the difference of the braking action may only have a certain deviation from the maximum value. This places high demands on the pressure gauges.

Also, the scale layout has to comply with guidelines as to ensure the accuracy requirements for the instruments.

* For trucks with a total weight of 7.5 t pneumatic brake systems are used.

Our solution:

Instruments for the use in supervisory organisations have to comply with certain laws and regulations.

The German calibration and measurement law states:
Measuring instruments for the inspection of air pressure in brake systems of vehicles with air pressure brakes are subject to the calibration obligation (conformity assessment) according to art. 2 para. 2

The calibration / conformity assessment is carried out ex-ternally by the Board of Weights and Measures.

The guidelines for the application, quality and inspection of brake test benches require instruments with scales that are at least 150 mm (5.91" ) long and have high-precision graduation. The brake pressure has to be indicated in bar or kPa (smallest subdivision 0.1 bar or 10 kPa).

Furthermore, the application of pressure gauges in horizontal position has prevailed in workshops. This is why our instruments consistently bear the mark for horizontal installation position.

We are able to manufacture our measuring instruments according to these criteria.

Our duplex pressure gauge has the advantage to indicate the pressures between the test connection on the pedal brake valve and the test connection on the wheel brake cylinder. The validator has the ability to receive and evaluate two values at one glance. The pressure generated by the driver is measured. For comparison, the pressure that acts on the wheel brake cylinder is indicated.

Two single pressure gauges could be used alternatively. These are connected to the pedal brake valve and to the wheel brake cylinder. Here the values are indicated separately.

Other pneumatic pressures can be tested in the same way. The pressure gauges can be connected to the air spring or to the air supply, for example for brake balancing with a trailer.

Beyond the manufacturing of our pressure gauges, we also carry out repairs as well as the required repeat calibrations. The validity of the calibration is limited to 2 years by law. Afterwards, the instrument has to be tested and approved again.

Repeat calibrations also take place in-house by the Board of Weights and Measures.

Our advantages at a glance:

  • In-house repairs as well as repeat calibration
  • Smallest subdivision of the scale 0.1 bar or 10 kPa
  • Horizontal position of installation
  • Duplex pressure gauge for comparative pressure measurement
  • Case protection cap – protection of the instrument in rough workshop use (against shocks and impacts)

Pressure measurement in engineering

Bourdon tube pressure gauges for water jet cutting and high pressure cleaning (AppBe_M_090)

for manufacturers and operators of water jet cutting systems, surface treatment companies
Fields of application Pressure Measurement in Engineering ARMANO Messtechnik GmbH
The functional principle of water jet cutting and high-pressure cleaning is basically the same. Water is pumped via a line to a nozzle, to then be jetted under varyingly high pressure. But depending on the application, the requirements increase. The higher the pressure, the more complex the technology. In order to control pressures up to 4000 bar, the pressure gauges also have to meet high demands.

The problem:

When formed parts made of metal or plastic are cut with high-pressure water jets, the pressure gauges have to withstand extremely high and dynamic pressures (up to 4000 bar).
Therefore, the pressure gauge has to comply with special safety regulations in order to ensure the safety of the user in case of danger.
We have accepted this challenge and developed an instrument that meets these requirements.

Our solution:

Our safety pressure gauge of the category S3 has a break-proof solid front between measuring system and dial. In addition, a blow-out back allows for full pressure relief in case of danger, in order to protect the user from injuries.
The instruments of this category are furthermore characterised by their long service life and reliability. The specialty about this pressure gauge are the high-quality processed parts. They are adapted for these process conditions so that you are provided with an instrument that meets your individual demands. An additional case filling serves the purpose of damping and reducing vibrations.

Pressure measurement in engineering

Diaphragm pressure gauges for the measurement of steam pressure in field kitchens (AppBe_M_091)

for manufacturers of field kitchens
Fields of application Pressure Measurement in Engineering field kitchen ARMANO Messtechnik GmbH
A field kitchen is a mobile facility for the preparation of food. The field kitchen plays an important role in the military and also in emergency management, where large amounts of food have to be prepared to ensure the sustenance of the people.

The problem:

Generally, different types of cooking modules in the application of field kitchens exist. In our particular case, it is a cooking module with double jacket (inner and outer wall welded steam-tight). This jacket is partially filled with water. The water vaporises due to the temperature rise and causes an even heating in the kettle. Thus, the food is also heated evenly. The operating pressure is 1.5 to 2 bar (at 130 °C (266 °F) in the double jacket) and must not exceed 3 to 3.5 bar. The pressure in the kettle would get too high and increase the risk of destruction of the kettle, also entailing a higher risk of injury.

Our solution:

In order to save space, we use a vertical diaphragm pressure gauge. A special thread connection according to DIN 2999 ensures that no steam can escape and the system remains leaktight.

The kettle is operational at 1.5 to 2 bar. If the pressure rises into the scale area marked in red (3 to 3.5 bar), a safety valve opens automatically, steam escapes and the pressure drops. Water has to be refilled accordingly, and the system has to be vented in order to use the instrument again. If vacuum occurs (−0.6 to 0 bar), the kettle also has to be checked and, if necessary, has to be filled and vented.

Temperature measurement in tanks on utility vehicles

Digital thermometer LILLY for the reliable temperature measurement of sensitive media (AppBe_M_092)

for manufacturers of utility vehicles
Fields of application Temperature measurement in tanks on utility vehicles ARMANO Messtechnik GmbH
Road tankers and fuel tankers need to cover long distances on motorways or freeways. The content to be transported is highly sensitive to some extent (e.g. fuel, bitumen or dairy products). Phase transitions need to be avoided or the growth of harmful bacteria needs to be prevented. Furthermore, volumetric metering is necessary during filling or discharging the media. Thus, it is important to be able to read the temperature precisely and quickly.

The problem:

During transport of sensitive media over long distances, the temperature measuring instruments have to meet increased requirements due to vibration, environmental influences (dirt, rain, sunlight) and washing facilities.

Our solution:

A digital thermometer in rugged version, completely cast with PU (polyurethane). This version is vibration tested with an acceleration of 4 g.
